This mat's name comes from Pattamaadai, a small village in Thirunalveli district, Tamil Nadu. It has cotton warps and Korai (Marsh reed) wefts. It's unique for its softness and flexibility, ranging from soft to super fine. Crafting one takes 45 days of soaking and 2-4 months of weaving. The grass is harvested and cut finely, boiled, then dried and woven on a loom. An older tradition was to gift a couple a pair on their wedding, inscribed with their names and date. These mats had a long life and were meant for their entire journey, including a baby.
