Pattamadai mats come from a small village in Tamil Nadu. They have cotton warps and Korai grass wefts from the sedge family. Korai is found in marshy areas in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Mats range from soft to super fine, with the finest being called "pattu pai" or silk mats. It takes 45 days of soaking and processing, then 2-3 weeks to weave, or 4 months for super fine mats. The grass is harvested twice a year, cut finely while green, then sun-dried. It's boiled, sun-dried again, soaked for 3-7 days, and finally loomed and polished before sale.
